Dange was found wandering the streets of Baton Rouge, Louisiana in September 2022. She was full grown and assessed to be about 8 or 9 months old. Now 60 pounds, she weighed only 19 pounds at that time and had nearly terminal medical issues. Each night she slept on our chests listening to our heartbeat, and we didn’t know if she would be alive in the morning. But she kept waking up with us. And after significant medical treatment, she regained her strength and became a treasured and intensely bonded member of our family.
We adore this dog with all of our hearts, but our life circumstances have now changed in such a way that we cannot keep her in our home.
Dange has scars on her paws that are clearly from other dogs when she was on the street. She has some pronounced fear-based reactivity to other dogs and will never do well with other pets or at the vet. To her people however, she is exceedingly loyal, affectionate, and responsive. We worked for almost two years with an excellent humane non-coercive trainer and Dange thrived. She will do well with someone who is good at keeping up such a routine.
On the joyful side, she is a full-on bed sleeper, licker, and lover and will make a perfect companion for a single person or small family with a fenced yard ideally in a more rural setting. For someone who works at home, she will happily be at your side throughout. Like many other rescues, she can be wary of new people but not overly so and generally warms up to them. She doesn’t really have any resource guarding issues and has no destructive behaviors such as chewing or digging.
We cannot say this emphatically enough – Dange is a remarkable treasure of a dog, just not a beginner’s dog. She is very smart, very loyal, incredibly gentle with her people, and very soulful. She comes with the lifelong problem of reactivity to other dogs that strongly appears to be based in trauma from when she was on the street and she deserves a good life. We deeply want her to find safe passage to a new home that will love her like we do.
We have done our best to hold her and love her for over three years. We always envisioned that she would remain part of our family for the rest of her life and we are heartbroken but committed to finding the right person to take over as the keeper of this amazing animal.
