Lost and Found Pets
If you have found a stray dog, please check with surrounding neighbors and contact your local Animal Control Officer (ACO), who may be looking for the dog or can assist you. The majority of towns in Addison County have someone in this position. 2024 ACO list.xls.
If an owner cannot be located, please fill out the form on the right-hand side of this page and call us at 802-388-1100 ext. 110.
If you have found a stray cat, please check with surrounding neighbors. If an owner cannot be found, please fill out the form on the right-hand side of this page and call us at 802-388-1100 ext. 111.
If you have found a stray animal and are NOT located in Addison County, please contact your county's animal shelter.

Return-to-Owner Process:
If your lost pet is at Homeward Bound, rest assured that he or she is safe and cared for!
To reclaim your pet we will ask that you:
- Provide proof of ownership (vet records in your name, a town license in your name, bill of sale, adoption contract, etc.)
- Be prepared to pay the applicable fees* and show proof that your pet is currently vaccinated against rabies. PLEASE NOTE: All stray animals brought into the shelter and not picked up by end of shelter hours will be vaccinated for rabies, distemper, and Bordetella (dogs) for the safety of our shelter animals and staff.
- If your dog is not currently licensed in the town in which you live, we will take a $25 deposit and you will have 5 business days to provide proof of current license. Deposit will be forfeited if proof of license is not supplied within 5 business days

- Age (approximate is fine)

- Describe collar, tags
- Address where last seen (include town)

Homeward Bound observes the state-mandated stray animal holding period of 5 business days , so it is important to report your missing animal as soon as possible. At the end of the the holding period, Homeward Bound will begin the process to prepare all unclaimed animals for adoption.
If you have FOUND a stray animal and are willing to continue providing care to him/her, please contact us immediately to and provide the following information to help us match the animal with their owner if they call to report them missing:
- PHOTO
- Breed/Color/Description–describe distinguishing marks
- Sex (including if spayed/neutered if known)
- Age (approximate is fine)
- Describe collar, tags
- Address where found (include town)
- Date found
- Your contact information — Please indicate whether or not we may publish your contact information for people to contact you if they believe you have their pet.
