Who We Are
Our Mission:
To be a community-centered shelter that supports the human-animal bond through compassionate care, adoption, education, and advocacy.
Our Vision:
- A community that is nurturing and compassionate towards all animals.
- A community where no animal suffers from abuse or neglect.
- A community where companion animals are treated as lifelong, valued family members.
Our pledge to donors:
- We make all donors feel appreciated and show how their gift is making a difference.
- We share real stories about animals rescued and lives changed for the better thanks to the generosity of donors.
- We build relationships with our donors, asking them to share their experiences and opinions with us so we may continue to improve the lives of animals in need.
- Donors that support Homeward Bound know that their gift has an immediate impact on animals in our community.
About Us
Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society, is a private and independent 501(c)(3) shelter dedicated to protecting the wellbeing of homeless, abandoned, and abused/neglected animals.
We serve over 2,000 animals per year, including those who enter the shelter and those who receive services through PetCORE, PetFIX, and other community programs. Our community services are designed to combat pet overpopulation, provide support to low-income pet owners, and enhance the human-animal bond through adoption, education, and outreach.
In 2023 we launched a Strategic Plan that will lead us through 2025. In 2025, we will celebrate 50-years of serving animals in Addison County!
Our annual operations budget for the animal shelter and spay/neuter clinic is approximately $900,000. We receive no funding from federal, state or local government and no unrestricted funding from national humane organizations. With a staff of 13, we rely heavily on volunteers to enhance the lives of the animals and the generous donations of our community members to help us continue the wide-spread impact our services provide animals and pet owners in our community.
We are extremely proud of our work to make a difference in the lives of so many animals, and we are grateful to those who support us through volunteering, monetary support, and other donations. Together, we can continue this important and impactful mission.
